Why 70+ Lehigh Valley PA Businesses Closed in 2023

Written by Karen McKeon, Staff Accountant

In 2023, the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania (comprised of the cities of Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton) saw an uptick in the number of businesses closing their doors.  Similar trends were found nationwide. As we progress through the current market environment, navigating expectations is critical. We will take a closer look at reasons for business failures, prevention strategies to avoid closure, lessons learned from shuttered businesses, and strategies for business sustainability.

Reasons for Business Failures in the Lehigh Valley

The reasons comprise a number of factors, such as inflation, labor shortage, evolving consumer habits, and life factors. In discussions with numerous businesses, the lack of available employees seems to be an issue in every industry. Companies must find a unique way to retain and attract new employees so they can be a step ahead of their counterparts. One other factor that many people do not consider is that when one business closes, adjacent businesses are impacted. For example, if a factory closes its doors, the surrounding restaurants and other small businesses in the area will be greatly impacted.

Business Closure Prevention

You can mitigate business closures in a number of ways. Improved market research and front-end due diligence set things on the right path and give you a step above the rest. Strong financial management provides a detailed understanding of business strength and needs, along with informed decision-making. Making the right decision in the beginning will avoid many headaches in the long run. Other factors include the ability to adapt to change, meet market demands, and meet customer expectations. Knowing what your customer wants at all times will help with business decisions and will push you to make necessary changes before it’s too late.

Understanding the lessons learned from failed businesses is critical. A review of these factors helps in developing a solid business plan that can grow and adapt. Knowing what the market needs in a specific line of business is a competitive advantage. Knowledge of the competition is recommended. This will help you have a competitive advantage in a market that could already be tough. Also, knowing how many similar businesses are in your demographic will help you decide if the current location you picked for your business is the right choice. Learning to stay flexible and adapt to change is a necessity. If you are not willing to flex from your original plan when the market changes, then you will have a tough time sustaining your business. Other factors include assessing when to expand, while not doing so too quickly. You need to have all the right pieces in place before expanding your current business model. Make sure the business plan is detailed and accurate; many failed businesses lack a solid plan.

The primary goal of a business is ongoing operations, profitability and sustainability.  Strategies for sustainability include customer knowledge, having a detailed long-term business plan, and setting clear goals. Along with those plans you also need to maintain employee engagement, document progress and track performance. Finally, working within the community to solve problems and create solutions can help your business stay sustainable and profitable for years to come.
